Freshman swimmer qualifies for nationals

Simon Fraser University swimmer set a meet record in the 200-metre freestyle with the fastest time in the NCAA Div. II this season

Simon Fraser University freshman Adrain VanderHelm booked his ticket to the NCAA Division II nationals with a record-setting swim at the recent Clan Cup International.

VanderHelm qualified for the national championships following a meet record victory in the men's 200-metre freestyle at the SFU-hosted meet last week. His time of 1:36.29 is the fastest time in the NCAA so far this season.

In surpassing the Div. II A standard time, VanderHelm automatically qualified for the NCAA championships to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana March 11 to 14.

The first-year, Barrie, Ont. native also has the fastest time this season in the 200m individual medley and the seventh-fastest 100m free time.

"It is nice to get this out of the way early, so he can focus on preparing for nationals," said SFU head swim coach Liam Donnelly in a school press release. "As a freshman, he has adapted and excelled in our environment."

The Clan's men's and women's 800m relay teams are both ranked No. 1 in the Div. II nation, following meet records at the Clan Cup.

The No. 7-ranked women's team of Nicole Cossey, Lauren Swistak, Alexandria Schofield and Maran Kokoszka recorded a time of 8:19.67 in 800m.

Cossey's 100m time of 50.63 in the free is fourth-best in the nation so far this season.

Swistak currently holds the second-fastest time of 2:01.20 in the 200m butterfly. Clan teammate Carmen Nam, a senior, has the third-fastest time at that distance in the fly at 2:03.02.

The men's team of Gabriel Lee, Dimitar Ivanov, Saveli Yungman and VanderHelm posted a combined 800m time of 7:23.36.
