Golfers to NCAA nationals for second time - with photo

Simon Fraser University freshman places sixth at Division II regional championships

The Simon Fraser University men's golf team is headed to the NCAA Division II national championship for a second straight year.

Simon Fraser combined for a 908 team score – 44-over-par – to tie for third out of 20 teams at the NCAA Div. II West/South Central Regional championships at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, California to qualify for the men’s national championships for the second consecutive year. The Clan finished 17th last year, its first appearance at the championship tournament.

The Clan will head to Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, North Carolina on May 18 to 22 with four other teams from the West/South Central event - overall team champion Cal State Monterey Bay, Sonoma State, Chico State, and West Texas A&M.

Freshman Chris Crisologo of Richmond, who led the Clan with an even-par 72 in the opening round, led the charge for the Clan, placing sixth out of 107 participants in this week's 54-hole event.The Richmond golfer fired a four-over 220 total. He was just three shots behind individual co-medalists Patrick Skakel of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Ray Richards of Cal State Monterey Bay, who both finished with a one-over-par 217 for the week. 

Crisologo moved up four spots on the final day with his best round of the tournament, a one-under 71. He had 10 birdies in the tournament.

Teammate Bret Thompson, the 2015 GNAC champion, fell 10 spots on Wednesday after shooting a six-over-par 78. He was tied for 19th with a three-round total 226. His tournament included nine birdies and one eagle.

Senior captain John Mlikotic rebounded from an 81 in Round 2 to tie for 35th spot at 230 after a 75 today while 2014 GNAC champion Kevin Vigna of Coquitlam tied for 65th after rounds of 82, 77, and 79 (238). Sophomore Alan Tolusso of Burnaby, who withdrew from the second round due to illness, shot an 81 on Wednesday after opening with a 76.

Cal State Monterey Bay, which finished fourth in last year's regional and placed fifth at nationals, ran away with the region championship this season, firing an 887 (+23), 19 strokes ahead of runner-up Sonoma State. Chico State and Simon Fraser tied for third with a score of 908 and West Texas A&M moved from 10th place after day one to fifth place after three rounds to secure the fifth and final bid to the nationals.
