Burnaby’s Andy Luo put in a second round that would have put him in contention – if struggles on Day 1 and 3 didn’t dampen his sights.

Luo finished the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Humber College PGM Classic tied for fourth in the juvenile boys division after a three-day total of 231.

He stood 10 strokes off the pace and eighth overall following an opening 80, but climbed the charts with an even-par 72 on the second day at the University Golf Course in Vancouver. His Day 2 score was boosted by 12 par holes and three birdies. The third round, which saw Luo finish up with a 79, was played at Coquitlam’s Vancouver Golf Course.

Luo’s final tally left him tied for fourth overall, one shot back of third and 16 back of the lead.

In peewee boys competition, Alfred Yeung had a solid first round of 80 but fell back of the front runners with scores of 89 and 91 (260) to place seventh overall.

Bradley Gagnon shook off a rough start in the junior boys division by firing rounds of one-over 73 and 76 to finish eighth overall. His overall score of 234 was inflated due to an opening round of 85, where a triple-bogey on the second hole was part of a 10-over on the front nine.

In under-15 girls play, 10-year-old Luna Lu put in a strong showing in finishing in a three-way tie for sixth overall. The youngest of all the 19 girls who finished the tournament, Lu fired rounds of 79, 80 and 83 (242) to fall just 11 shots back of the leader, Richmond’s Tina Jiang (231).

Medals tally in jiu-jitsu

A couple members of Burnaby’s Infight Canada Jiu-Jitsu school returned from an international competition in California with medals.

Infight coach and athlete Eduardo Cadena, 39, picked up bronze at the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation Pans in the black belt of master 2/medium-heavy division, while Michael Ebaghetti, 31, collected a pair of bronze medals in blue belt in master 1/super-heavy and open weight class divisions.
