Burnaby's Nelson Elementary School won the triple crown of volleyball this year.
On Dec. 2, a boys' and girls' elementary school volleyball team from Nelson topped all other competition from Burnaby at the annual co-ed tournament hosted by Barton Lim at Burnaby Mountain Secondary School.
Nelson placed fourth overall in the tournament, finishing behind two Surrey teams, Erma Stephenson A and B, and Vancouver's Lord Selkirk Elementary in the 29-team Lower Mainland competition.
Five days later, Nelson's boys' and girls' teams won a competitive district playoff at the Harry Jerome Sports Centre.
The boys' competitive team showed excellent teamwork, sportsmanship and camaraderie in their games versus other district teams.
They Knighthawks beat Sperling in the quarter-finals, a team that was undefeated during the season up until then. Nelson then defeated Gilpin in the semi-finals to advance to the district final against Marlborough.
The Nelson boys defeated Marlborough 25-19 to win the district championship on Dec. 7.
Congratulations to Jason Moore, John Alfred Colobong, Hadie Honardoust, Joseph Kim, Dalvir Moore, George Brar, Harmandeep Brar, Mason Wu and coaches, Mr. Morrison and Mr. Phillips.
The following day, the Nelson girls completed the sweep, winning their first-ever district volleyball title at Cariboo Hill Secondary on Dec. 8.
