SummerSkate kicks off season

Canadian junior dance champions Madeline Edwards and ZhaoKai Pang of Burnaby placed first in their event at the B.C. SummerSkate at Burnaby 8Rinks.

Canadian junior dance champions Madeline Edwards and ZhaoKai Pang of Burnaby placed first in their event at the B.C. SummerSkate at Burnaby 8Rinks.

Pang and Edwards led by more than three points over Burnaby Figure Skating Club's Danielle Wu and Spencer Soo following the short program.

They then scored a 76.79 score in the free dance to win handily over the Burnaby pairing with a 131.78 total score. Wu and Soo scored a 121.58 total, holding off a challenge by third-place finishers Brianna Delmaestro and Timothy Lum of Burnaby, who posted a second-best 70.71 score in the free dance.

Burnaby's Nicole Orford and partner Thomas Williams won the senior dance with a 140.00 total.

B.C. Centre of Excellence skater Jeremy Ten won the senior men's competition, scoring 219.91 points after posting the high scores in both the short and free programs.

Naomi Inoda of Burnaby placed runner-up in a close senior women's final with Amanda Hoffman of the B.C. Centre of Excellence.

Inoda scored a high freeprogram score of 68.86 but finished less than two points behind Hoffman in the final scoring.

In the novice men's skate, Burnaby's Venjamins Volskis finished in third place overall.
