The Burnaby Art Gallery is reaching out to help artists with professional development. The gallery is launching its series of seminars for artists with a session by acclaimed Canadian artist Brendan Fernandes today (Thursday, Sept. 15).

The gallery is launching its series of seminars for artists with a session by acclaimed Canadian artist Brendan Fernandes today (Thursday, Sept. 15).

Running from 6 to 8 p.m., the International Residences and Resources seminar will feature Fernandes' experiences participating in international artist residencies and exhibitions through Asia, Europe and the U.S. and offer advice for artists on developing international opportunities.

Fernandes, who was born in Kenya of Indian heritage, immigrated to Canada in 1989 and studied art at York University, and University of Western Ontario and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

He has exhibited nationally and internationally, with highlights including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Art and Design New York, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and the Andy Warhol Museum.

He has participated in numerous international residency programs, and he currently bases himself in Toronto and New York.

This is the second year for the artists' professional development series, which is geared towards practicing artists at any level in their career.

* Grant Writing: Allison Collins, an independent curator, writer and arts administrator, will lead this session on Sept. 24.

* Artist Bookkeeping: Marianna Scott of Quantum Accounting leads this session on Saturday, Oct. 29

* DIY Project Building: Local Funding Resources - Art historian, educator and arts administrator Carol-Ann Ryan will lead this session on Nov. 5.

* Marketing and Social Media for Artists: Rebecca Coleman, a freelance theatre publicist, leads this session on Saturday, Nov. 12.

* Tax Relief: Painless Tax Preparation: Marianna Scott of Quantum Accounting leads this session on Saturday, March 10.

* Artist's Estate Planning: Martha Rans leads this session on Saturday, March 17.
