Celebrate summer at two city festivals

Summer arrives this weekend, though it looks like it may be a rainy one. Still, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the prospect - if not arrival - of warmer weather to come.

Summer arrives this weekend, though it looks like it may be a rainy one. Still, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the prospect - if not arrival - of warmer weather to come. This week, there are two festivals taking place - the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival and the Burnaby Multicultural Festival. But that's not all that's happening in Burnaby. We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here's our Top 5 list for June 21 to 23.

1 Get celebrating the Scandinavian way at the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival at the Scandinavian Community Centre at 6540 Thomas St. this weekend. The annual festival kicks off with music and dancing on Friday night. On Saturday, there is the Paavo Nurmi Run, plus a Viking village and entertainment throughout the day, including mischievous Knotty Tail Trolls, a brass quintet, Scandinavian folk musicians and more. Sunday starts off with a family brunch, and the highlight of the day is the annual wife-carrying competition. For detailed information on the festival schedule and more event information, go to www.scandinavianmid summerfestival.com.

2 Get multicultural at the Burnaby Multicultural Festival on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bonsor Recreation Complex at 6550 Bonsor Ave. There will be food, children's arts and crafts, and entertainment from a variety of cultures, including a performance by the Burnaby International Folk Dancers. Admission is free.

3 Get learning about radio history through the Burnaby Village Museum and Burnaby Public Library's free lecture series. This Saturday at the museum's Discovery Room from 10: 30 to 11: 30 a.m., there will be an antique radio show and shine with Fred Carey from the Society for the Preservation of Antique Radio in Canada. Organizers suggest registering in advance to avoid disappointment. To register, call the museum at 604-297-4565, visit the museum at 6501 Deer Lake Ave., register at any city recreation centre or do so online using WebReg: webreg.city. burnaby.bc.ca. The registration code is 298930.

4 Get autographs from your favourite Senior Men's National Sevens rugby team players this weekend. Rugby Canada has announced the team will be holding their final training camp at the Fortius Athlete Development Centre ahead of the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens. The squad will train at the facility until Sunday, when they will fly to Moscow, Russia to prepare for the upcoming tournament. The players will be open to signing autographs following the training sessions. Sessions run on Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 5: 30 p.m. The centre is located at 3713 Kensington Ave.

5 Get cheering for the Burnaby Lakers in the West Coast junior B lacrosse league. The Lakers are currently in third place and are hosting the No. 1 Coquitlam Adanacs at Bill Copeland Sports Centre on Saturday at 8 p.m. Burnaby is backstopped by Cody Gilliam, who leads all goalies in save percentage. The centre is at 3676 Kensington Ave.

6 Get collecting sports memorabilia at the Bonsor Sports Collectors Show on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bonsor Recreation Centre, 6550 Bonsor Ave. Get autographs from former Boston Bruin great Gerry Cheevers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information on this and future collectors' shows, go to www. bossashows.com.
