Honour those who have served and sacrificed

Edmonds Community Centre held a Remembrance Day ceremony Nov. 5 to honour the men and women who have served in war over the decades.

The event started with flagmarching from the 637 Arrow Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, and there was a wreath-laying ceremony, poetry and songs.

For Friday, Nov. 11 there are a couple of events on where local citizens can honour veterans who've sacrificed for our freedom. In North Burnaby, Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 148 will be hosting its ceremony at the Confederation Park Cenotaph. Coun. Sav Dhaliwal is scheduled to attend this ceremony, which also includes a parade, starting at 10: 30 a.m. from the Safeway parking lot at 4400 Hastings St. The ceremony begins at 10: 45 a.m. There is a moment of silence at 11 a.m. (See the Heights section on page 18 for more details.)

In South Burnaby, Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 83 will be hosting its ceremony at the Bonsor Park Cenotaph, located at the corner of Imperial Street and Jubilee Avenue. Mayor Derek Corrigan is scheduled to attend this ceremony, which also includes a parade from the Legion No. 83 office at 5289 Grimmer St. The parade starts at 10: 30 a.m., with the ceremony scheduled to begin at 10: 45 a.m.

The George Derby Centre at 7550 Cumberland St. will also host a Remembrance Day ceremony starting at 9: 30 a.m.
