It is the last weekend of April and soon we'll be transitioning from weekend showers to May flowers. But rain or shine, there are plenty of things to do this weekend in Burnaby. There is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada's Pineapple Challenge, an all-candidates meeting, the Esso Cup and more. We're continuing with our popular feature - the Burnaby NOW's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here's our Top 5 list for April 26 to 28.
1Get releasing 50,000 chum salmon into Eagle Creek at Charles Rummel Park with the Eagle Creek Streamkeepers Society on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be hot dogs, chili and beverages available.
2 Get running in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada's Pineapple Challenge at Swangard Stadium, 3883 Imperial St., on Saturday from 9: 30 a.m. to 2: 30 p.m. The Pineapple Challenge has teams of two to 10 racing along a five kilometre obstacle course. The Hawaiian-themed event wraps up with a luau party including food, music and beer. Teams are encouraged to dress up in their silliest and most creative costumes. The obstacles are a surprise until event day, but participants can expect to see approximately 10 different obstacles. The funds raised go to blood cancer research and local patient services. The family-friendly event has a participation age minimum of 15 years. Swangard Stadium will host the start/ finish, final obstacle, and luau party, and the spectator area is open to all ages. 3 Get shopping at the giant flea market at Maywood Community School, 4567 Imperial St. on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be door prizes and a concession area. Admission is $0.50.
4 Get cheering at the final two games of the Esso Cup on Saturday. The tournament features female midget hockey teams from across the country. The battle for bronze will take place at 2 p.m., while the gold medal match is scheduled for 6 p.m. All games are played at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre and tickets are available at the door.
5 Get researching your ancestors through the Genealogy and Family History seminar, with Glenn T. Wright and Lesley Anderson, at the Danish Lutheran Church in the downstairs hall, at 6010 Kincaid St. on Saturday. The British Columbia Genealogical Society is sponsoring the all-day seminar. 6 Get caught up on the election issues in North Burnaby at an all-candidates meeting co-hosted by the Civic Association of Iranian-Canadians, Capitol Hill Community Hall Association and Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion (BROKE). The meeting takes place Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Community Hall, 361 S. Howard Ave. and will include all four riding candidates: Richard T. Lee - B.C. Liberal Party, Wayne Marklund - B.C. Conservative Party, Carrie McLaren - Green Party of B.C., and Janet Routledge - B.C. New Democratic Party.
