Music helps kids

Enjoy some quality live music and help bring music to the lives of children in need. Music Share, a non-profit group that advocates for music education and music therapy, is holding a fundraising concert on Sunday, Oct.

Enjoy some quality live music and help bring music to the lives of children in need.

Music Share, a non-profit group that advocates for music education and music therapy, is holding a fundraising concert on Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Scandinavian Community Centre.

The 1 p.m. concert features live performances by Catrina Centanni and Jason and the Diatonics, with keyboards by Erik Olson and background vocals by Stephanie Olson.

Money from the event will be used to help purchase educational materials - including music books, CDs and instruments - to help the group start running outreach programs in January 2012.

Tickets are $25 for adults or teens. Children 12 years and under are free with an adult ticket-holder.

LIBRARY HOLDS A PARTY

They're turning 10, and you're invited to share in the fun.

Burnaby Public Library's McGill branch and the City of Burnaby Archives are celebrating their 10th anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 5, with a day full of activities from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

You can take in a Celtic harp performance at 10: 30 a.m., a puppet show at 11 a.m., a tai chi demonstration at 12: 15, a Chinese dance performance at 1 p.m., a puppet show at 2 p.m., an author reading at 2 p.m., a Vancouver Italian Folk Chorus performance at 3: 30 p.m., Irish storytelling at 4 p.m., a Capitol Hill Madrigals Renaissance choral music performance at 5 p.m., a National Film Board screening of animated short films at 5: 45 p.m. - Whew.

Oh, and don't forget Ralph Shaw, the "King of the Ukulele," at 6 p.m., a performance by Polaris String Quartet at 7: 15 p.m. and a classical guitar performance by Chris Albanese at 8 p.m.

The archives will hold an open house all day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a chance to view a display of rare documents and artifacts and to meet the archivists.
