NEB hearings slated for Burnaby

Intervenors' final arguments on Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion will happen in Burnaby hotel

Burnaby intervenors in the National Energy Board’s hearing on the Kinder Morgan expansion won’t have to travel far to present their final arguments this September.

The board announced Thursday that summary arguments for intervenors will take place inSeptember at the Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre, although exact dates haven’t been set yet.

According to the NEB, the decision was made because many intervenors are based in B.C. and Burnaby in particular.

“We wanted to hold hear the oral summary arguments in Burnaby, mainly to be responsive to the needs of our intervenors,” said NEB spokesperson Tara O’Donovan.

Oral summary arguments are the final arguments intervenors make before the three-person panel reviewing the pipeline expansion proposal.

“It’s their opportunity to highlight elements of their argument to the board. It’s not to present new evidence or reiterate every single point they made,” O’Donovan said.

When asked if the general public could sit in on the hearings, O’Donovan said there would be more details coming. However, people will be able to watch the hearing online.

As for Kinder Morgan, the NEB will hear the company’s argument in Calgary in late August. That gives intervenors a chance to respond to the pipeline proponent’s case while presenting in September.
