Pawn takes stage in Burnaby

With the anniversary of 9/11 right around the corner, it's fitting timing for a theatre production that looks at Canada's involvement in Afghanistan through the eyes of a single man.

With the anniversary of 9/11 right around the corner, it's fitting timing for a theatre production that looks at Canada's involvement in Afghanistan through the eyes of a single man.

Pawn, a folk-rock musical written by former Vancouver resident and current Stanford student Karmia Chan Cao, will be playing at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby on Aug. 6.

Pawn follows Abraham Niu, a young Asian Canadian soldier stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan, into the darkest night of his life. The production is making only one stop in Canada during a world tour this summer which is expected to conclude at the New York International Fringe Festival.

The show was workshopped as Abraham Niu and the Friendly Fires in the spring of 2010, and was produced at Stanford last fall by the Stanford Theatre Activist Mobilization Project and the Asian American Theatre Project.
