Burnaby Lake Rugby Club did not come away empty-handed from the Lower Mainland Cup finals.

The premier men lost the Miller Cup but came away with the Division I Cup final at Klahanie Park in West Vancouver on Saturday.

Host Capilano defeated Burnaby Lake 20-11 in the Elite League Miller Cup final just one year after being relegated from the top tier of club rugby in the province.

Capilano never trailed in the matchup, opening the score off a penalty kick from scrum half Matt Yanagiya's first of 15 points in the game.

Burnaby's Geoff Ryan momentarily tied the score with a three-point penalty. But Yanagiya responded shortly after, converting his own try to put the Caps into the lead for good at 10-3.

Capilano also scored off an intercepted pass to go into the break leading 17-3.

Burnaby started the second half with a try from Canadian rugby championship player of the year Jo Dolesau, who picked up a loose ball to score the Lakers' only five-pointer.

Yanagiya and Ryan traded penalty kicks to round out the scoring.

"When you have the chance to play a team like Capilano, it gives us something to measure ourselves against," said Burnaby Lake head coach Kris De Scossa in a B.C. Rugby press release.

In the Spray Div. I cup final, Burnaby Lake came back from 15-0 down to shock the top-seeded Bayside Sharks 20-15 with a dramatic second-half comeback.

Burnaby South Secondary grad Nolan Shelley was responsible for most of the points, booting five penalty goals for the winners. Brad Mchugh scored the only try for the Lakers.

"At halftime we said, 'We just needed to be patient and finish hard.' We went into the second half with confidence. We held onto the ball, stayed patient, and we executed," said Burnaby Lake head coach Dave Murphy in the release.
