With Burnaby’s municipal election looming, residents across the city are gearing up to go to the polls on Nov. 15. Before the ballots are cast, the Burnaby NOW is asking locals about the importance of voting and what matters to them in this year’s election.

This week, the NOW talked to SFU English and history student Sam Willett:

Why do you think voting is important?

“To say it’s important, it’s kind of… everyone will say that, but it’s something that we have here in Canada that you don’t get in other parts of the world. I think it would be disrespectful to take that for granted. You have other parts of the world where they don’t have voting, or they have voting but they don’t have the same setup as we do here: it’s not fair and it’s not an accurate representation of what the people want in their leaders.

“It’s important to vote because we need to appreciate the things we’ve been given here and what we have in Canada. We have this privilege and we should use it to express ourselves.”
