Accused in Lynn Valley stabbing spree faces additional charges

Yannick Bandaogo now faces five counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault in addition to murder charge

The man accused of second-degree murder following a knife attack on seven people in Lynn Valley that left one woman dead is now facing additional charges.

Yannick Bandaogo, 28, has now been charged with five additional counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault in relation to stabbings that occurred at the Lynn Valley Village library complex on March 27.

The RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team announced the new charges Wednesday morning.

On March 27 just before 1:40 p.m., the North Vancouver RCMP received a report of multiple victims of a stabbing at the library. When officers arrived at the scene, they found multiple victims in and around the library complex, suffering from stab wounds. One woman later died of her injuries.

On March 28, Bandaogo was charged with second-degree murder.

“This was a tragic incident that has shaken all of us and we share the families’ and community’s grief and outrage,” said Detective Corporal Sukhi Dhesi, media spokesman for IHIT.

Dhesi said the additional charges resulted from the dedication of the investigating officers as well as their partnerships with the North Vancouver RCMP and the Lynn Valley community.

Bandaogo has been held in custody since his arrest on the day of the attack.

He has not yet had a bail hearing or entered a plea to any charges.

Bandaogo’s defence lawyer, Georges Rivard, said he is still waiting for details of the case to be disclosed to him.

Rivard said he’ll need to see that “before we can expect to make any informed decisions.”

Bandaogo also faces a charge of assaulting a peace officer on May 6, while he was in custody at North Fraser Pre-Trial Centre.

Bandaogo’s next appearance by video in North Vancouver provincial court is scheduled for Oct. 7.

Homicide investigators said earlier they don't know what motivated the knife attack.

Bandaogo, who is from Montreal, had no connection with any of the victims and no home in B.C., according to police.
