The Fraser Health Authority is warning the public about an increase in overdoses in North Surrey which appear to be associated with a "grey or dark grey purple down substance."

The health authority took to Twitter Monday (March 1) to issue an overdose alert, which is due to a reported increase in overdoses in North Surrey in the past 24 hours.

The alert adds that people with high tolerance levels are also experiencing overdoses as well as extremely low levels of consciousness. In order to reverse the overdose, high amounts of naloxone are required.

Never use alone

The Fraser Health Authority reminds you not to use alone, if possible. Instead, use supervised services.

If you must use alone, plan to have someone check in on you or use the Lifeguard App--available on an iPhone or Android.

If you use with friends, stagger your use so someone is able to get help. Test small amounts first; go slowly. Also, do not mix alcohol or other drugs.

Plan to survive: How to respond to an overdose

  1. Call 9-1-1 immediately
  2. Open airway and give breaths
  3. Give naloxone (Narcan) if you have it
