A tennis tournament that will likely feature a number of the highest-ranked players from around the world will be hosted by Vancouver in 2023, officials said today.

Organizers of the Laver Cup said the tournament next year will be held in Vancouver’s Rogers Arena Sept. 22-24. The tournament, which takes on a Team Europe/Team World format similar to golf’s Ryder Cup and pitting the game’s top individual players in a team format, has been held four times since its inception in 2017.

This year’s version will be held at London’s O2 stadium in September, and the 2024 tournament will be held in Berlin.

“We’re delighted to bring the Laver Cup in 2023 to Vancouver, a beautiful city which is renowned for hosting major sporting events,” said Laver Cup CEO Steve Zacks in a statement. “It will also be our first time coming to the West... Both [Vancouver and Berlin] are exceptional, progressive destinations with incredible facilities and a rich cultural heritage, along with thriving tennis communities.”

The Laver Cup was created by TEAM8 – the management company of tennis superstar Roger Federer – in conjunction with Brazilian magnate Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia. Over the years, the tournament has featured top-ranked icons such as Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, as well as Canadian stars like Milos Raonic, Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

This marks the second time within a week where a major sporting tournament announced Vancouver as a host city. Last week, FIFA officially said Vancouver will play host to games for the 2026 World Cup for soccer.
