The Independent Investigations Office of BC is investigating an incident in New Westminster in which a suspect was injured during an arrest.

Information provided by the New Westminster Police Department indicates that on March 9 at approximately 8:15 p.m., police responded to a reported disturbance at a residence in the 1200-block of Quayside Drive, said an IIO news release.

“When officers arrived, a man and a woman were found at the location,” said the release. “The man was placed under arrest and while being taken into custody, an interaction reportedly occurred which resulted in the man sustaining serious injury.”

Emergency Health Services were called and transported the man to the hospital for treatment.

The IIO is asking any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident to contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
