Beat the winter blues at Bonsor

Burnaby residents are invited to done their leis, sunglasses and Hawaiian shirts and beat the blues at Bonsor on Monday.

Bonsor Recreation Complex and Bonsor 55+ centre are heading to the tropics on Monday, Jan. 21.

“We are having a day for both centres called Beat the Winter Blues. We are asking all our participants and staff to dress up tropical,” said Don Doyle, a recreation programmer at Bonsor 55+. “We are trying to encourage everybody to beat the winter blues at Bonsor.”

Tropical Monday at Bonsor includes entertainment, including Hawaiian dancers and belly dancers, a ukulele player. Entertaiment gets underway at 10 a.m. in the main lobby at Bonsor Recreation Complex, before proceeding to the Bonsor 55+ Centre’s lounge, where punch and fruit will be served for seniors.

“We just thought, wintertime, what can we do for the community to pump it up and think tropical?” Doyle said. “We thought, let’s have a tropical day and encourage our instructors and everybody to dress up tropical and go from there.”

People are encouraged to wear tropical attire or bright coloured workout gear when taking part in activities at Bonsor on Jan. 21. Draws and prizes for best dressed costume are part of the day’s fun.

Bonsor Recreation Complex is at 6550 Bonsor Ave. and Bonsor 55+ is next door at 6533 Nelson Ave., Burnaby.
