Burnaby temple hosts Chinese calligraphy contest

Scribes from all over the Lower Mainland descended on Burnaby’s Tian-Jin Temple for a Chinese calligraphy contest on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Scribes from all over the Lower Mainland descended on Burnaby’s Tian-Jin Temple for a Chinese calligraphy contest on Sunday, Sept. 18.

The Chinese Taoism Kuan-Kung Association, which runs the temple, partnered with the Rotary Club of Vancouver Centennial to host the contest.

“It went really well especially the format of the competition. Everyone thought it was fair. We did random draws of the topic,” said Jeffrey Yu. “There was no preparation, and this was a live competition, so this is kind of unique in a way.”

In other calligraphy contests, the competitors can send in submissions prepared in advance. This was all live, and the draw ensured no one could practice the poem in advance.

Yu estimated 25 to 30 competitors and their families attended the event. The first place winner received a trophy, while second and third got certificates.
