EPIC hosting community café

Group wants to know how residents would improve their neighbourhood

Maybe it’s a music performance, a cultural show or some new street art? If you have an idea to improve the Edmonds area, a local community group wants to hear them.

Edmonds People in Community, the Edmonds area residents’ group, is hosting a community café on this month to foster ideas on improving the neighbourhood.

“We’re calling it a community café, and it’s meant to create community and have people in the Edmonds town centre come and see how we can partner with people to help their dreams come true,” said Lindy McQueen, one of the founding members of EPIC. “There could be a group of people who would dearly love to share their music or their history, or they would like to see certain activities that aren’t happening. We thought if we get enough people that are interested we could make it happen.”

The community café will have a series of tables, each one labelled with a different topic. Attendees are encouraged to visit the table that sparks their interest and chat with neighbours to brainstorm things to improve the neighbourhood. An EPIC member will facilitate the group through a series of activities to help the process. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

“People can brainstorm what they would like they see,” McQueen said.

EPIC has roughly six core members, so they will also be asking interested parties to volunteer to make the ideas reality.

The community café also helps people get to know their neighbours, McQueen said. Edmonds is one of the most diverse neighbourhoods in the Lower Mainland and home to refugees and immigrants from several countries.

“If you show up, it’s amazing what you can learn about your community and the interesting people that you do meet that you had no idea that were living here,” she said.

The café is on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Gordon Presbyterian Church, 7457 Edmonds St. Info: www.epiccommunity.ca.
