Fraser Health has identified the Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar in New Westminster as the site of a potential COVID-19 exposure event in April.

Fraser Health is warning people who attended a house of worship for Sikhs in New Westminster last weekend that they may have been exposed to the coronavirus during their visit.

The health authority on Friday issued a COVID-19 exposure alert for the Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Saga, located at 347 Wood St., and two associated events in other Metro Vancouver communities.

The potential exposure at the place of worship took place Saturday morning, April 24, between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The "associated events," meanwhile, are listed as having taken place at private residences in Langley, on April 22 from noon to 7p.m., and Burnaby, on April 24 between 5:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar is operated by the Khalsa Diwan Society New Westminster, a non-profit organization. "The Gurdwara, meaning literally the gateway to the guru, is the abode of God accessible to anyone in quest of spiritual and religious progress and interested in kirtan (singing of hymns) and the teachings of Sikhism (or Sikhi)," according to the institution's website.

The health authority lists public exposures on their website in order to reach any people who may have potentially become infected who they could not contact privately. While the potential exposure events are believed to be low risk, Fraser Health asks anyone who was in attendance to self-monitor for symptoms of the virus.

"There is no known risk to anyone who attended any listed locations outside of the specified dates and times. If people remain healthy and do not develop symptoms, there is no need to self-isolate and people can continue with their usual daily activities," explains Fraser Health.

Those who do find themselves developing any symptoms of COVID-19 are urged to seek testing and immediately self-isolate, says the health authority.
