The windows of New Westminster are full of hearts and stuffies to show solidarity with fellow residents and health-care workers in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Westminster residents are showing their hearts and spreading the love all over town.

The windows of New West reflect the community’s commitment to their health-care workers and to their fellow families and residents.

A global movement to put teddy bears and other stuffies in windows to share cheer for passersby – originally inspired by the children’s picture book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, by Michael Rosen – has spread on social media, and New Westminster residents have jumped on board. Residents have been sending in photos of their own windows, and neighbours have been capturing pictures of stuffed friends peeking out of windows around the city.

Another global movement, to put hearts in windows to show the love to other community members and to front-line health-care workers, has also caught on around the city. Hearts have been spotted in business windows, apartment buildings and homes around town, and readers are continuing to share their photos.

At the same time, the 7 p.m. cheer for health-care workers is gaining steam throughout New West. Each night at 7 p.m., residents go out onto their balconies and porches to bang pots and pans, play musical instruments and make noise of all sorts as a thank-you to the front-line workers in local facilities.

Emergency services personnel have also been taking part, leading parades of emergency vehicles past the hospital as part of the recognition.
