The Burnaby NOW sent the following five questions on housing to each of the Burnaby candidates.
Candidates were asked to answer each question in 50 words or less.
Here are the answers from Steve Darling, running for the B.C. Liberals in Burnaby-Lougheed.
1. What city do you live in, and what neighbourhood in that city?
I've lived in the riding at several different points throughout my life and I've worked here for the past 18 years. We're currently 20 minutes outside of the riding in Port Coquitlam where we've moved to take care of our aging grandmother.
2. Do you rent or own your own home?
We are currently paying rent in a home where we are caring for my grandmother.
3. If you own a home, when did you buy it? How has the current housing market situation impacted you?
N/A
4. If you rent, or have another housing arrangement, how has the current housing market situation impacted you?
The current market has its challenges for people but it also shows how well B.C. has done to attract people to our province. Continuing to provide good paying jobs and working with municipalities to improve supply is the way forward.
5. If there is one single policy that the next provincial government can enact to address a housing need, what would that policy be? Be specific.
I will be taking steps to address housing affordability in Burnaby-Lougheed by creating a task force of experts and community members on this issue in an effort to develop a localized solution to increasing our affordable housing supply for homeowners and renters.
