The Burnaby NOW sent the following five questions on housing to each of the Burnaby candidates.
Candidates were asked to answer each question in 50 words or less.
Here are the answers from Sylvia Gung, running as an Independent in Burnaby-Lougheed.
1. What city do you live in, and what neighbourhood in that city?
I live in Burnaby in the Forest Grove area.
2. Do you rent or own your own home?
Rent in a B.C. Housing townhouse complex.
3. If you own a home, when did you buy it? How has the current housing market situation impacted you?
I had my own home two decades ago, in Winnipeg. Looking at the current housing situation, I don't think I'd ever be owning a house again, even if I get elected (which is highly unlikely since not many know me), and bring home tons of valuables, those ugly bribes included!
4. If you rent, or have another housing arrangement, how has the current housing market situation impacted you?
Living here for a decade, current market shouldn't affect much, but it does. The attitude of the landlord and the Residential Tenancy Office gets more hostile. Some fear evictions caused by wrong or plotted accusations that created three evictions. I witness how the flawed actions of authorities damage tenants' relationships.
5. If there is one single policy that the next provincial government can enact to address a housing need, what would that policy be? Be specific.
Site C resources must urgently be redirected for affordable housing for all, including people with medical conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer's, autism, and so on. In all, the affordable housing policy that terminated building of such, decades ago, must be re-installed in an encouraging way for multi-generational lifestyles.
