A Burnaby performer is front and centre in the next outing by Pacific Theatre.

The theatre is presenting a guest production of The Wolves, produced by With a Spoon Theatre in association with Rumble Theatre. It’s onstage Oct. 19 to Nov. 10.

The play centres on nine teenage girls who are preparing for a game under the lights of an indoor soccer field – one of whom is played by Burnaby’s own Ali Watson.

Watson will be familiar to NOW readers from previous appearances – among other shows, she’s appeared URP’s Jesus Christ Superstar and RENT, Align Entertainment’s Legally Blonde, and Awkard Stage Productions’ Cry-Baby: The Musical.

With The Wolves, she’s coming to the stage in a play that has earned acclaim for playwright Sarah DeLappe. The play – DeLappe’s first published play - was a Pulitzer Prize drama finalist in 2017.

“I was staring down the barrel of what it means to be a young woman in this industry, how it entails objectifying yourself and putting yourself out for roles like the stripper with a heart of gold or the girlfriend until you’re the mother,” DeLappe said in a press release.

The roles in The Wolves reflect DeLappe’s belief that there is space for complex teenage girls and their stories.

The play first came to the stage at Pacific Theatre in the spring of 2017 as an apprentice project for producers Danielle Klaudt and Paige Louter, who are also in the cast. That brief run sold out, and now it’s coming back for a four-week season slot. The cast and crew includes former Pacific Theatre apprentices, recent theatre school grads and independent actors and designers.

“By partnering with us, Rumble and Pacific Theatre have shown faith in emerging female artists in our city,” Klaudt said in the release. “The future of Vancouver theatre is bright.”

The production is directed by Jamie King and also features Georgia Beaty, Tanja Dixon-Warren, Kim Larson, Jalen Saip, Shona Struthers, Amanda Sum and Montserrat Videla.
