UPDATE: Burnaby talents in the running for 2020 Ovation! Awards

Burnaby's Oliver Castillo has earned an Ovation! Award nomination for his work as Joseph in Gateway Theatre's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

UPDATE JAN. 27:

The 2020 Ovation! Awards were presented last night (Sunday, Jan. 26) at the Vancouver Academy of Music. 

Burnaby nominee Colin Sheen emerged the winner in the Outstanding Leading Performance - Male for his work as Johnny in URP's American Idiot.

Burnaby talent is once again in the spotlight, as nominations have just been announced for the 2020 Ovation! Awards.

Align Entertainment’s production of Annie, which ran at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in February, has earned three nominations. Kevin Woo is up for Outstanding Musical Direction, while Nicol Spinola has earned a nomination for Outstanding Choreography. Daniel Curalli, who played Rooster, is up for Outstanding Supporting Performance – Male.

A pair of Burnaby residents have also earned nominations for Outstanding Leading Performance for their roles in Gateway Theatre’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: Oliver Castillo in the male category for his work as Joseph, and Chelsea Rose in the female category for her role as Narrator.

Other current and former Burnaby residents are also among the nominees: Synthia Yusuf for Outstanding Leading Performance – Female for her turn as Maria in the Arts Club production of The Sound of Music; Colin Sheen for Outstanding Leading Performance – Male for his work as Johnny in URP’s American Idiot; and Caleb Lagayan for Outstanding Leading Performance - Male for his work as Peter in Eternal Theatre Collective’s Bare: A Pop Opera.

Awards will be presented at a gala on Sunday, Jan. 26 at the Vancouver Academy of Music.
