Her songs and her voice have the music world abuzz, and you can hear her on the stage in Burnaby in the new year.

Begonia is set to perform on Friday, Jan. 31 as part of the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts’ new Deer Lake After Dark music series.

Begonia – a.k.a. Alexa Dirks – originally made her name working in ensembles such as the Juno-winning Chic Gamine. But she stepped out on her own in 2016, when she dubbed herself “Begonia” and went to work on an EP that was released in 2017.

Now she’s touring in support of her first LP, Fear, which was released this past September. She’s supported by Jason Pankratz on bass, Cody Iwasiuk on drums and Graham Leaver on keyboards.

“Fear is a deeply personal album, at once bursting with ruminations on solitude, self-doubt, anxiety and panic, all bundled up in that serene feeling that comes with an artist fully embracing themselves in both the past and the present tense,” says a press release. “Her music feels like something we’ve all been waiting for the chance to say, but couldn’t quite phrase.”

The Deer Lake After Dark series will continue with the Jerry Cans on March 13.

Begonia’s performance is at 8 p.m. in the James Cowan Theatre at Shadbolt Centre, 6450 Deer Lake Ave. Tickets are $25, available through tickets.shadboltcentre.com or 604-205-3000.
