Catch the best of Vancouver's contemporary dance scene next month

Burnaby dancer-choreographer Cristina Bucci is onstage with OURO Collective in the biennial event, running Nov. 20 to 24 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre

A Burnaby dancer will be in the spotlight when Dance In Vancouver returns in November.

The 12th biennial event celebrating B.C.’s contemporary dance scene is set to run from Wednesday, Nov. 20 to Sunday, Nov. 24 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre.

The 2019 edition features performances by companies including Amber Funk Barton/the response, Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY, OURO Collective, Raven Spirit Dance and Vision Impure, along with discussions and free events.

Burnaby dancer-choreographer Cristina Bucci is onstage with OURO Collective, which performs its multidisciplinary work HAKO on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The event, which is produced every two years by the Dance Centre, focuses on promoting B.C.’s contemporary dance talent to both local audiences and to dance promoters and curators who come from across the country and around the world to experience West Coast dance.

“Dance In Vancouver works on many levels,” said executive director Mirna Zagar in a press release. “It’s a great opportunity for local audiences to experience work by local artists; our artists get the chance to build their national and international connections; and the presenters become more informed on our dynamic and diverse dance scene. Over time we have seen significant growth in touring activity, and B.C. dance is now enjoying enhanced visibility on the world stage.”

Dance In Vancouver opens on Wednesday, Nov. 20 with a day of free talks and events from 4 to 11 p.m., including a roundtable discussion about dance in the city, plus a keynote address.
