A Governor General’s Literary Award-winning author is coming to Burnaby.

David Alexander Robertson is visiting the Burnaby Public Library’s McGill branch (4595 Albert St.) on Wednesday, April 1, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

During his visit, Robertson will speak about residential school history, legacy and reconciliation through his books When We Were Alone, Sugar Falls and 7 Generations. The books are all aimed at young readers (When We Were Alone is recommended for kindergarten to Grade 3, while 7 Generations and Sugar Falls are recommended for grades 9 through 12). When We Were Alone won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature - illustrated in 2017, for Robertson and illustrator Julie Flett.

“Starting the conversation early is not only appropriate, but necessary,” Robertson said in a press release.

Robertson is an advocate for educating youth on Indigenous history and contemporary issues. He writes about sensitive subjects such as teen suicide and missing and murdered Indigenous girls and women.

He’s a member of Norway House Cree Nation and lives in Winnipeg.

His talk is free, and all ages are welcome. No registration is required. For more information, call 604-299-8955 or see www.bpl.bc.ca/events.
