Lively City: Garden parties and outdoor music? Must be summer

If you’re a fan of photography or gardening – or both – you’ll want to stop by the Burnaby Village Museum this weekend.

A reminder to all fans of urban farming that this weekend is a garden party and artist talk for Ward Teulon: Growing Season, the Burnaby Art Gallery off-site exhibitions that are currently underway at three locations around the city.

The exhibitions are on at Stride Studios at Burnaby Village Museum and two Burnaby Public Library branches – Metrotown (6100 Willingdon Ave.) and McGill (4595 Albert St., North Burnaby).

All three feature the work of Ward Teulon, who has captured Burnaby’s urban gardens, their harvest and the creatures who live in them.

The garden party and artist talk is set for Saturday, June 27 at Burnaby Village Museum. You can tour backyard garden displays and photo exhibits, enjoy live music and sample some refreshments.

Teulon will be on hand, as will representatives from the Burnaby and Region Allotment Garden Association and other local urban farmers.

The 90 per cent and above club!

Congratulations are in order for some local music students who emerged with top-notch results from the recent Royal Conservatory of Music examinations.

Robin Chen of Burnaby’s Starlight Music Studio sent us an email to let us know about some of the studio’s student achievements.

Thomas Li, Harold Yan and Cynthia Liall earned 95 per cent on their advanced rudiments exam, while Jenny Guoearned 90 per cent on her Grade 9 piano exam and 91 per cent on her music theory/harmony exam.

Kudos to all!

The sounds of summer

Nothing says summer like outdoor music.

If you want to enjoy some of the best summer has to offer, be sure to stop by UniverCity at SFU on Wednesdays. Each Wednesday, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., musicians will be on hand to entertain folks in the town square (next to the Cornerstone building).

Francis Hensonperformed on June 17, and Caitlan Readbrings her fiddle to the square for today’s (June 24) show. On July 8, it’s the string duo Stringz Aloud, and 17-year-old singer-songwriter Kaya Kurz is featured on July 15.

Each day also includes a UniverCity market and a ping-pong table, plus seating, so be sure to turn out to enjoy a summer afternoon.

Check out www.univercity.ca/events for the full list.
