It’s officially summer, and with the weather getting better by the week, the City of New Westminster is bringing back its summer movie series.
Presented in conjunction with Derrick Thornhill from Park Georgia Realty and the G&F Financial Group, the series will show eight family-friendly films for free at Queen’s Park Stadium.
The outdoor venue will host free screenings every Friday to the end of August, kicking off with Disney’s Frozen on July 11. Other films include Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (July 18), The Muppet Movie (July 25), Top Gun (Aug. 1), Despicable Me 2 (Aug. 8), a singalong version of Grease (Aug. 15), Up (Aug. 22) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (Aug. 29).
Stadium doors open at 7 p.m. and the movies begin around 8:30 p.m.
Going to war over poetry
There are endless opinions and viewpoints on famous works of poetry, but a local group is working to navigate the warzone.
Held on the third Saturday of the month, the Poetry Wars study group analyzes poetry and offers a platform for members to share their perspectives on various types of written works. The latest session is scheduled for July 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Heritage Grill, 447 Columbia St.
“Not for the faint of heart, the poetic arts in Canada roil with snark and tendentious commentary,” reads the release. “What this study group will do is explore our literary environment, read poems, reviews, texts, commentary.”

The Renaissance Bookstore is all about connecting people with good reads, but also good readers.
The Sixth Street store is hosting its monthly short story open mic night on July 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. Storytellers are encouraged to bring their own short stories, essays, books and journals to read from. As well, beverages and snacks will be available at the Renaissance Coffee Bar.
