WHAT’S HAPPENING?

The annual Deer Lake Craft Festival, a Burnaby tradition for 49 years, returns to the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

WHEN?
It’s on Friday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 24. It’s open Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?

The festival uses a jury process to select the finest artisans and crafters with a wide range of creations. Visitors can browse among more than 60 artisans that run the gamut from glass blowers, sculptors and potters to wood artists, textile artists and jewelry designers. There’s also always a great selection of seasonal foods (think chocolates, spice mixes, Christmas cakes, cookies, jams, jellies, chutneys and more).

Visitors can also enjoy entertainment all weekend long, and there’s a craft area for kids, too.

This year’s festival once again includes the Park’s Edge Paint Off, with artists going head-to-head in a live painting battle on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

After that, the audience has a chance to vote on their favourites (up until 4 p.m. on Sunday). The artwork created during the battle is also sold online in an auction.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?

Admission and parking are free, and it’s open to all ages, so take the whole family over to take part in the fun. For more details, see www.burnabyartscouncil.org or call 604-298-7322.
