A top North American ballet school is holding auditions in Burnaby.

Alberta Ballet School will be in Burnaby on Sunday, Feb. 3 as part of its national audition tour, at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts (6450 Deer Lake Ave.). Young dancers aspiring to join a professional dance company are invited to take part in the auditions. Audition day is separated into junior auditions, for dancers aged nine to 13, and senior auditions, for students aged 14 and up.

A successful audition will earn students an invitation to attend the school’s Summer Intensive program, held July 3 to 26 in Calgary. Participation in that program will then be used to assess students, with some being accepted into the full-year Professional Division programs.

“Artistic and academic faculty work in unison to ensure student success while fostering a positive, healthy and inclusive environment,” said artistic principal Ashley McNeil in a press release. “We consider Alberta Ballet School unique from other professional ballet schools, developing well-rounded dancers who are sought after by dance companies around the world.”

As students in the official training school for Alberta Ballet, dancers have a chance to train with the company’s artistic staff and dance in professional productions, such as The Sleeping Beauty, which had its world premiere last fall, and The Nutcracker.
