Interested in capturing the life of your community on film? North Burnaby residents are being invited to take part in a collaborative community film project, NB24.

North Burnaby residents are being invited to take part in a collaborative community film project.

NB24, or 24 Hours in North Burnaby, is a project that’s designed to give community members a chance to create a visual document “representing their perspective and the things they cherish from this community,” according to an email from facilitator Yunuen Perez Vertti.

Perez Vertti and Grant Withers will work with participants on the creation of a 24-minute film spanning 24 hours in North Burnaby – in which each hour of the day is condensed into one minute on screen.

Through discussions and hands-on film and video skill-building workshops, participants will plan, film and edit the film. They’ll score it, in conjunction with local musicians, and then show it to the community.

Perez Vertti noted the facilitators will host Zoom workshops sharing the basics of filmmaking, and they’ll also host discussion sessions to plan the filming schedule.

“Every participant will have a choice of what hour of the day they will like to shoot and the location they will want to film,” she said in an email. “If multiple participants would like to film the same hour or the same place, it will be possible for participants to film as a group.”

Participants can use their own film or video equipment, but facilitators will provide equipment for those who need it.

Perez Vertti said the facilitators will provide support and guidance throughout to ensure that everyone has a “rewarding experience” filming their hour.

The finished film will be shared with the public during the STRIDE 2021 Burnaby arts festival. The festival, coming up in January, will include a series of outdoor screenings with physical distancing and audiences capped at 25.

The NB24 project is being funded by a Neighbourhood Small Grant.

No previous filmmaking experience is necessary, and it’s free to sign up. Anyone who’s interested needs to register by Nov. 10. Sign up at www.tinyurl.com/NB24signup, or email yapvfilms@gmail.com.
