A local woman plans to help out family and post-secondary students with her lottery winnings.

When Eleanor Kendall scratched her way to a Set for Life top prize of $675,000, she knew she wanted to use the money to give back. The New Westminster resident plans to put some of the money into her family’s endowment fund at a Lower Mainland university.

“My husband and I are big supporters of programs that encourage women to go into the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and early childhood development,” she said in a press release. “We already have an endowment in our name so we will use some of the money to top it up.”

Kendall was at home and about to do the laundry when she decided to scratch the Set for Life ticket that she purchased at the Save-On-Foods in Royal City Centre.

“I had to count it a few times to make sure I really won,” she said.

Along with supporting her family’s endowment fund, Kendall is looking forward to using the winnings to help her own family.

“I firmly believe we all need some help sometimes,” she said. “No one helped me but we have to help the kids – they are the future.”

According to the BC Lottery Corporation, Set for Life players redeemed more than $10.5 million in prize-winning Scratch and Win tickets in 2019.
