People living with muscular dystrophy will have more funding for day-to-day support thanks to the hard work of Burnaby firefighters.

In November, Burnaby firefighters stood outside of a number of local businesses and asked people passing by to help “fill their boots” in support of muscular dystrophy.

The annual boot drive has been held across the country since 1958 and raises money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The recent event in Burnaby, held on Nov. 22 and 23, raised $45,000 for the national, non-profit organization, which will be used to “provide support for those living with muscular dystrophy,” stated a media release.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada currently provides support for 47 people living with the neuromuscular disorder in Burnaby. There is no cure for the disorder, which can be life threatening and is “characterized by the wasting and progressive weakness of muscles,” the release added.

“Muscular Dystrophy Canada would like to thank the Burnaby residents for their generosity during this year’s boot drive. Their support helps the organization improve the lives of those affected by neuromuscular disorders,” stated the release.

Along with Burnaby firefighters, a number of businesses also participated in the boot drive, including Brentwood Town Centre, HighGate Village, Lougheed Town Centre, Canada Safeway, Costco Wholesale, Kensington Square Plaza and Metropolis at Metrotown.
