Light bulbs, chandeliers and Christmas lights will no longer have to head to the landfill, now that LightRecycle, a non-profit recycling company, is accepting all lighting fixtures across B.C.
"LightRecycle is one of 14 industry-managed recycling programs in the province that reinforces British Columbia's position as North America's leader in environmental stewardship and recycling," said Brock Macdonald, CEO of the Recycling Council of British Columbia, in a press release. "Expanding the program to include all lighting products from all sectors means that fewer recyclable materials will end up in landfill."
LightRecycle has been accepting fluorescent lights since 2010, but starting Oct. 1, the program now accepts all lighting fixtures, bulbs and tubes for a small fee.
Light bulbs and tubes, ballasts, and lighting fixtures are now accepted, as are lighting fixtures, which includes everything from Christmas lights and floor lamps, to chandeliers and flashlights. The expanded program covers all types of lights, including fluorescents, halogens, incandescent bulbs, LEDs, and high-intensity discharge lamps.
The drop-off fees run from 15 cents to $2.50 per item, depending on type. (For a full list of fees, go to www.lightrecycle.ca.)
There are more than 200 collection sites across B.C. to drop off burnt out light bulbs and tubes, and 80 sites to drop off lighting fixtures.
