Burnaby business owner Helen Tomei - whose business, Sacred Earth Journeys, the NOW profiled last year - is taking registration for a transformational youth camp through Teen Journey, a Vancouver non-profit, which takes place on the Sunshine Coast from July 2 to 8.

Long-time city staff honoured

Burnaby's city manager Bob Moncur and deputy city manager Chad Turpin were both honoured for their long years of service by the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators.

Both received awards for 25 years of service with the city, though Mayor Derek Corrigan pointed out at the June 18 council meeting that they had worked for the city for longer.

Turpin has actually worked for the City of Burnaby for 40 years, Corrigan said.

Turpin was also given a Long Service Award for 35 years from the Local Government Management Association of B.C. this year.

New employment centres open in Burnaby

New employment centres opened in Burnaby as of April 2, when the province launched its new Employment Program for B.C.

The centres are run by GTI Hiring Solutions, which has run employment programs throughout British Columbia for 18 years, according to the company's CEO, Frank Bourree.

The location at 600-1901 Rosser Ave. is having its ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 5, though it also opened in April, he said.

There is also a centre in South Burnaby, at 1-4710 Kingsway, and the company subcontracts out to Mosaic, a non-profit agency for assisting immigrants, at 7297 Kingsway, as well.

BCIT honours director of student services renowned landscape architect at convocation

The British Columbia Institute of Technology recognized two people during its convocation ceremonies last week.

Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, a landscape architect based in Vancouver, received a honorary Doctor of Technology degree at a ceremony last Wednesday.

"For over 60 years, Cornelia has created innovative and sustainable landscapes across North America including the Robson Square and Law Courts complex and the Vancouver Public Library," a press release from BCIT stated.

Jim Mitchell, the institute's former director of student services, will receive a distinguished service award at a ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday.

Mitchell retired in 2009 after working at BCIT for 35 years, starting as assistant athletic manager.

William McCarthy wins award

William McCarthy - president and CEO of W.P.J. McCarthy and Co. property management and development firm in Burnaby, and a columnist with the NOW - received the Emeritus Award from the Real Estate Institute of Canada earlier this month.

"The Emeritus Award is the highest honour bestowed on a member and recognizes a member's sustained commitment and outstanding contribution to REIC at the national and chapter level and to the real estate profession," a press release from the institute stated.

The award was given to McCarthy at an awards banquet in Calgary on June 2.

Burnaby's Bagga family business nets award

Jiva Organics and New World Natural Foods, run by Burnaby's Bagga family, received a New Canadian Entrepreneurs award in the manufacturing category last month.

Kulwant, Jawahar and Rajinder Bagga - directors of the company - received the award from the Ethnic Business Council of B.C. at a gala dinner at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on May 31.

The awards recognize "outstanding entrepreneurs born outside of Canada who best reflect business achievement, leadership, innovation and community involvement in the areas of export, manufacturing, retail, service, technology and wholesale," according to a press release from the event.
