Burnaby couple raises $9,000 for hospital

Couple wanted to say thanks for treatment that saved their baby girl's life

The summer garage sale fundraiser organized by a Burnaby couple for B.C. Children’s Hospital was a smashing success.
Matt and Amanda Arneill’s garage sale event raised $9,000 for the hospital.
The couple wanted to give back for the care their infant daughter Lauren daughter received. As reported in the NOW, the Arneills had a harrowing experience and almost lost their little girl to a rare heart defect in the summer of 2012.
Fortunately, the hospital was able to resuscitate Lauren, and she’s been recovering well ever since.

Girl Rising
Malala Yousafzai – 15 years old, shot in the head point blank by the Taliban, while taking the bus home from school, all because she wanted girls in Pakistan to go to school.
Malala’s tale is featured in a new film Girl Rising, based on the lives of nine girls from around the world and their determination to pursue an education against all odds.
World Vision Canada is hosting a free screening of the film in Burnaby on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Michael J. Fox Theatre.
The film, directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins, has not been released in theatres, and it doesn’t appear to be available online yet, so this Burnaby event may be your only chance to see it. (Check out the trailer by searching for Girl Rising on YouTube.)
I’m told World Vision got involved because two of the nine girls have been helped through their sponsorship program.
The Burnaby screening includes a panel discussion on the making of the film and the importance of educating girls around the world.
The theatre is at 7373 MacPherson Ave. Go to www.girlrising.ca for more information on the event.
