Burnaby couple reunited after NOW story renew vows

It wasn’t their style, according to a long-time friend, but two Burnaby seniors renewed their wedding vows this week after being reunited at a local care home.

It wasn’t their style, according to a long-time friend, but two Burnaby seniors renewed their wedding vows this week after being reunited at a local care home.

Arne and Iris Sorbo, who’ve been married for 58 years, were reunited at Normanna Rest Home in February after the story of their nearly yearlong separation in different care homes was featured in the NOW.

On Wednesday, Normanna hosted a sunny outdoor ceremony, complete with bubbles drifting in the breeze, for them to renew their vows.

It’s not an idea the couple would have come up with themselves, according to Arne, who once sat on the board of Normanna, a care home established by the Norwegian community – the Sorbo’s community.

“People who are happily married are going to be remarried,” said Arne. “I could have said no, but I felt I did a little good to the organization.”

The ceremony wasn’t Iris’s kind of thing either, according to friend Kari Meidal, who’s known the couple since 1958, but she said her friend perked right up in the company of old friends on hand for the event.

“Sometimes she’s as clear as can be,” Meidal said. “Now she’s enjoying it.”
