Burnaby Family Life marks 40th anniversary

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. In the last 40 years, the Burnaby Family Life Institute has grown astronomically in terms of the number of programs offered and the clients served, but at the core, its goal is still the same: Supporting the people of Burnaby.

Programs are hosted around the city, in locations in Metrotown, Edmonds, North Burnaby, at local elementary and secondary schools, as well as one site in neighbouring New Westminster. The organization runs without any core funding; money comes from various agencies and sources, fundraising, and government grants, as well as the support provided by volunteers, donations in kind and subsidies from the local school district and the city.

Some programs are so popular there are waiting lists, or line-ups to access drop-in services and people have to be turned away.

The organization will be holding its 40th anniversary annual general meeting at the Grand Villa Casino on Sept. 20, with a panel of speakers that includes local representatives from government, business and community service organizations.
