Burnaby’s Maria Giles is celebrating 40 years as a retail employee in the grocery store industry.

Not easy work, in particular during a pandemic. Instead of having an event to celebrate her outstanding long service, Maria asked her co-workers to make a donation to BC Children's Hospital and dress in Hawaiian attire for two Wednesdays in August. This is not the first time Maria has engaged co-workers and customers in raising both awareness and funds for BC Children's Hospital. As the Customer Service lead for the Burnaby Old Orchard Save-On-Foods location, Maria leads Round Up events, Ugly Christmas Sweater fundraisers and has more creative ways to keep up the generous spirit of the Burnaby community with an upcoming onesie event.

On Wednesday, Maria was presented with a certificate of recognition by Mary MacKillop, director Patient Experience for BC Children's and BC Women's Hospitals and Health Centre for Maria's outstanding support of kids and families cared for at BC Children's Hospital. Maria has personal experience with BC Children's with her now grown daughter and says her gratitude for that care has never left her.
