One of the riders in the Cops for Cancer tour received a financial  boost from students at Burnaby’s Alpha Secondary School.

Alpha Secondary sponsored one of the riders, VPD Const. Karma Cosmacini, who stopped by the school during the bike tour to raise money for cancer research.

“It was great, we raised a few hundred dollars, and we still have donations coming in,” said Alpha teacher Hersimer Johl.

The Cops for Cancer tour kicked off Wednesday in Coquitlam, and Alpha was the third stop in Burnaby for the 24 riders doing the Tour de Coast leg of the fundraiser. The group of police officers and emergency services personnel are on a nine-day bike tour, covering 900 kilometres of the B.C. coast, as far north as Pemberton and Powell River, and back down to Vancouver on Sept. 26 for the closing ceremony.

The riders collect pledges to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, and proceeds help pay for pediatric cancer and support programs for cancer patients. All Cops for Cancer participants have to raise a minimum of $6,000 and the Alpha students pitched in $1,500, which helped Cosmacini reach her goal.

Alpha students collected donations for the cause, held a bake sale and organized a draw with donated prizes, including a autographed B.C. Lions jersey, donated by former CFL player Will Loftus.
