Wal-Mart Canada is running a campaign to raise money for the Red Cross at its stores until Aug. 31.

The Canadian Red Cross provides disaster management and emergency relief across the country and throughout the world.

Burnaby residents can donate at the Wal-Mart location at Lougheed Town Centre.

The national fundraising goal is $2.8 million, and $308,200 for B.C. and the Yukon Territories.

"Funds raised will help the Canadian Red Cross to be prepared to provide assistance within hours of a disaster," says David Magnuson-Ford, B.C. fund development manager of the Canadian Red Cross, in a press release. "We're very excited to work with Wal-Mart during this annual fundraising campaign, and know that Wal-Mart shoppers will get behind the Canadian Red Cross."

Wal-Mart customers will be asked if they'd like to donate to the campaign by checkout tellers at the stores.

Recent Red Cross campaigns include currently sending aid for the Horn of Africa drought, flooding in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec and B.C. last spring, fires in Alberta, and the crisis in Sudan, according to the organization's website.

The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and more than 185 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, according to the release.

The Canadian Red Cross mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world.

Wal-Mart Canada operates 329 stores throughout the country, employing 85,000 Canadians.

Since 1994, the company has donated and raised more than $125 million for Canadian charities and nonprofit organizations, according to the release.
