Burnaby’s Fortius Sport & Health hosted the Canadian women’s U25 national wheelchair basketball team last week.
The women were in town to prepare for the 2015 Women’s U25 World Championship in Beijing June 30 to July 6.
Canada will face the top teams in the world, starting with Great Britain June 30.
“The training centre that we’re playing in (in China) is actually very similar to what Fortius offers, where we’re playing, we’re eating and we’re sleeping all in the same complex,” head coach Ross Norton told the NOW. “I’ve been here before, and I think it’s a fantastic facility. When you’ve got somewhere that you can stay and play, you’re using a lot less energy in transportation. You’ve got more rest time, and that’s important.”
Canada’s women’s national soccer team also trained and stayed at the facility in the lead-up to the FIFA Women's World Cup and will continue to hold training camps there to get ready for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Canada’s first fully-integrated sport medicine, science and training venture, Fortius Sport & Health is located at 3713 Kensington Ave.
