Burnaby's Hindu temple is hosting its annual picnic this weekend, and people of all faiths are invited to celebrate and enjoy a free vegetarian lunch.

The picnic is Sunday, July 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park, at 4600 Byrne Rd.

"We invite all communities to come and join the picnic. It's like a social gathering," said Pandit Sharad Chandra, the temple's priest. About 700 to 800 people usually show up, he added.

There will be tents set up, and a chance for people to sit and chant a holy prayer before breaking for a free lunch after noon.

"We supply all the vegetarian food from our temple. We cook fresh food," Chandra said.

Besides food and chanting, there will be entertainment, singing, games, sporting events, face painting and prizes. Save More Plumbing & Lighting helped pay for the food.
