Two Burnaby supermarkets are teaming up with a seniors' home-care business to collect food donations to feed the elderly.

"As seniors age, so do their nutritional needs. By keeping them properly fed and healthy, we can make a real difference in their quality of life," said Heather Martin, owner of Comfort Keepers franchises in Vancouver and Burnaby. "We want caregivers and family members to be aware of ways to monitor the nutrition of seniors in their care."

Comfort Keepers, a business franchise offering home care for seniors, launched a campaign in 2009 to address the problem of seniors going hungry.

Comfort Keepers will set up donation stations at two at Save-On-Foods stores in Burnaby: one at 7155 Kingsway, the other at 6100 McKay Ave. at Metrotown. People can donate of canned food until Saturday, Oct. 6, and on that day, people from Comfort Keepers will be at the donation drop-off locations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with information on seniors nutrition and a shopping list with healthy suggestions of needed items. The goal this year is to collect 1,000 cans of food.

The Salvation Army will be using the food for a Thanksgiving meal for seniors, and some of it will also be packaged in hampers for seniors to take home.

Comfort Keepers can also pick up donations from offices on Friday, Oct. 5. Call 604-689-8609 or email [email protected] to arrange.
