Celebrate Canada Day

It's Canada Day weekend - the perfect time to relax in the backyard or get out and celebrate at one of the city's special events for the occasion. But that's not all that's happening in Burnaby.

It's Canada Day weekend - the perfect time to relax in the backyard or get out and celebrate at one of the city's special events for the occasion. But that's not all that's happening in Burnaby. We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here's our Top 5 list for June 28 to July 1.

1 Get to know your fellow Burnabyans at the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion's summer barbecue on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free food, live music, games and crafts. The event is at BACI's Still Creek centre, at 2702 Norland Ave. Please note there is no parking on site, except for those with wheelchairs. Shuttle busses will run between 8 Rinks Arena and the centre.

2 Get supporting a good cause at the Bringing Marwa Home benefit concert on June 29. The event, held at the South Burnaby United Church at 7591 Gray Ave., is to raise funds to sponsor Marwa, a third-generation stateless Palestinian refugee currently in Syria. Marwa is the fiancé of another refugee, Wissam Nassar, whose family was sponsored and brought to Canada by the Macdonald family in 2011. For more on their story, go to bit. ly/17AUPx9. The event includes stories and music featuring Ian Macdonald and Gordon Light of The Common Cup Company; Jamie, Rory and Derek Macdonald of The Orchid Highway; Wissam and Wassem Nassar on their experiences as refugees; and Heather Macdonald on refugee sponsorship. The funds raised are to go to Marwa's first year of expenses in Canada. The event takes place at 8 p.m. Admission is by donation, and $10 is suggested.

3 Get fit at the new Edmonds Community Centre, which is having its grand opening on Canada Day, as part of the city's Canada Day celebrations. The celebrations take place at the centre at 7433 Edmonds St. on Monday. Opening day activities will start before the official opening ceremony with a mass Zumba class for all ages and levels in the gymnasium at 9: 45 a.m. There will be free swimming and access to the weight and cardio rooms all day, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. At 11 a.m., the official opening will occur in the centre's foyer and include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, speeches and the dedication of the Fred Randall Pool. From noon to 3: 30 p.m., the gym will have basketball and badminton. There will be an open house for the preschool and playcare from 12: 30 to 3 p.m. In the arts studio starting at 12: 30 until 3 p.m., visitors can create their own postcards. At 12: 15 p.m., Canada Day's official ceremony will begin in Edmonds Park, followed by family activities, music, arts and crafts, and cake, ending at 3: 30 p.m.

4 Get patriotic at the Burnaby Village Museum on Monday, as well. The Canada Day festivities run from 11 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. at the museum at 6501 Deer Lake Ave. There'll be multicultural entertainment, musicians, displays and demonstrations throughout the 1920s village. Admission is free. For more info, visit www. burnabyvillagemuseum. ca and follow the link to Canada Day at the Village.

5 Get rocking at Foxfest on Monday night at Deer Lake Park, 6430 Deer Lake Ave. The Fox's annual FoxFest concert features head banging headliners Alice in Chains this year. The line up starts at 6 p.m. with Head of the Herd, Monster Truck and I Mother Earth all playing sets before Alice in Chains takes the stage.
