The City of Burnaby is inviting local residents to learn about invasive species at an upcoming workshop series in April.

People can learn more about invasive plants and their impact in Burnaby, how to better select plants for gardens, and how to remove and control invasive plants.

The first session, on nonnative plants in Burnaby, is on Sunday April 15 at the Shadbolt Centre.

The second workshop is on how to garden without invasive species on Sunday, April 22. The third workshop is on invasive plant removal and control on April 29.

Each workshop costs $5 per person, and runs from 10 a.m. till noon, in studio 102 at the Shadbolt Centre.

According to a City of Burnaby press release, invasive plants continue to be a gardening and environmental concern across Burnaby, the country and the world.

Quickly growing, rapidly spreading and readily seeding plant varieties, which are commonly found in garden centres, are wreaking havoc in backyards and gardens, as homeowners find these plants uncontrollable in their yards.

Once these plants escape or are improperly disposed into natural areas, they cause environmental, safety and health concerns, creating economic impacts to communities.

See the city's website for more information or to register. Go to www. burnaby.ca, and search invasive plants, or call 604294-7690.
